👻 We Survived Haunted Ice Gate

What do you mean, haunted ice hole?

The PWHL jokes that the “Ice is haunted” in the YouTube chat. March 4, 2026
Anthem completed, the Seattle Torrent and the Ottawa Charge were almost ready for puck drop, when officials noticed a big ass ice hole which created an unsafe surface. Unsuspecting Ottawa Charge fans did the wave in the stands as arena employees used fire extinguishers to fix the hole. The ice hole served as unintentional advertisement for Mr. Lube, a Canadian chain of automotive service centres, as the troublesome hole was within the on-ice advertisement. The Ottawa Charge was even playing hangman on the bench. Fans made signs to thank the zamboni drivers, as the hole took over an hour to fix.
Shoutout to the broadcast crew, arena staff, and Ottawa Charge fans for turning this into an iconic moment.

Ok, but what actually happened in the game?
TLDR: Jessie Eldridge (2 goals) is a revelation on the Torrent power play and Fanuza Kadirova (2 goals) is popping off on the Ottawa Charge! Watch my game recap with clips👇

😵💫 Controversial Calls Explained

Boston Fleet Empty Net Goal Overturned?
New York Sirens vs Boston Fleet, March 5, 2026: Fleet scored on an empty net in the second period, but the goal was overturned and the Sirens received 2 penalties. See the official game summary for timestamps and events. See the official PWHL rules for reference.
Detailed Timeline of Events:
The original penalty was high sticking called on the Sirens. A high stick is when you contact an opponent above the shoulders.

Sirens player Maddi Wheeler called for high sticking because her stick contacts Fleet player Megan Keller above the shoulders
The ref raised their arm for the penalty but did not blow the whistle. This made it seem like it was a delayed penalty.
A delayed penalty is when a penalty is called on the team which does not have control of the puck. The delayed penalty ends when the offending team touches the puck and the whistle is blown. The team that did not commit the penalty cannot get scored on during a delayed penalty, so they will normally pull their goalie in favor of an extra attacker.
The Sirens thought it was a penalty on Boston (this is not true). That’s why the Sirens pulled the goalie.
Fleet regained control of the puck and scored on the empty net.
The refs made a mistake. They should have blown the whistle as soon as New York gained control of the puck.
I assume the CSR reviewed the goal for “Missed Game Stoppage Event in the Offensive Zone Leading to a Goal”, but I was confused because it seemed like the high sticking took place in Boston’s defensive zone
The goal was overturned. Sirens were given two penalties: high sticking and too many players.
The too many players penalty is because, after the Sirens pulled the goalie, they realized their mistake and the goalie came back onto the ice, resulting in a total of 7 players on the ice. However, this only occurred because the refs made a mistake by not blowing a whistle.
Too many players may have been called because, according to the rulebook, if penalties are assessed between the time of the missed infraction (in this case the high sticking?) and the goal, those penalties still apply

Conclusion:
This situation took 15 minutes to resolve. The Central Situation Room (CSR) process needs to be streamlined and made clearer to fans. Many fans were confused by this whole situation and it can detract from the enjoyment of the game.
The PWHL removed coaches challenges this year and everything is being reviewed by the CSR. I took my friend Maddy to a Torrent game, and she used data to investigate how CSR reviews impact game lengths. She found that while the average doesn’t change much, long game time outliers are more common. Additionally, New York Sirens games tend to be longer than normal. What is Goalie Interference?
New York Sirens vs Ottawa Charge, March 8, 2026: Ottawa Charge Goal Overturned for Goalie Interference
TLDR: Goalie Interference is when an attacking player impairs a goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within their crease or defend their goal, resulting in a disallowed goal or a penalty. Watch my breakdown👇
