There’s one week left in the PWHL regular season and the Charge, Sceptres, and Sirens are still fighting for the final playoff spot! Meanwhile the Goldeneyes and Torrent have a gold plan duel against Victoire and Frost. And yes, it all ends on a quadruple header. I love this league 🤣

❤️ Celebrating Asian Hockey History!

Saturday, April 18 was the Seattle Torrent AANHPI Heritage Celebration so I thought this would be the perfect week to celebrate some Asian Hockey history!

Meet Julie Chu! 🏒🇺🇸

Julie Chu is a 4X Olympian who represented the U.S. in the 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 Olympics. She is tied for the second-most decorated American woman at the Winter Olympics.

She is the first Asian-American to represent the U.S. in ice hockey at the Olympics!

365 Asians in Hockey Takeover

If you want to learn more about Asian hockey history and current Asian hockey players, I highly recommend listening to the Asians in Hockey podcast.

I got to meet the host, Nate Nakao, during my trip to NYC. I did a takeover episode of Asians in Hockey, where I interviewed Nate and we chatted about our time hanging out at the MSG PWHL game.

Some of my favorite episodes of the podcast are:

  • Larry Kwong: The first Asian player to play in the NHL! Despite his amazing accomplishments, his story is unfortunately also one of exclusion and racism.

  • Alanna Mah: Captain of the Canadian Women’s Para Ice Hockey team!

  • Reagan Rust: Former pro women’s hockey player and mental health advocate!

  • the OG 365 episode: Me! Honestly, before listening to this podcast I didn’t know much about the multicultural history of hockey. This chat with Nate was super eye opening!

P.S. you can check out my data-driven exploration of the Jason Robertson snub. (Yes, it could have been due to racial bias).

Wed, Apr 15: New York defeats Toronto 3-2; The Sirens’ comeback win keeps their playoff hopes alive!

📍 Newark

The Sceptres got an early lead and even scored a jailbreak goal! The Sirens scored two goals in 1:10 to complete the comeback with Casey O’Brien scoring the game-winner! There was also a crazy diving save from Kayle Osborne who made 24/26 saves to keep the Sirens in this game.

Watch the game replay! (I couldn’t find highlights)

Wed, Apr 15: Boston defeats Minnesota 3-2; Eldridge and Müller are cooking🔥

📍 Lowell

Jessie Eldridge and Alina Müller have been magical together for the Fleet and they both earned 3 points in this game. Frost rookie defender Kendall Cooper is popping off as well with a goal and an assist in this game. The Fleet remain undefeated at Tsongas center.

Fri, Apr 17: Montreal defeats Boston 3-2 in OT; Victoire secures home ice advantage!

📍 Laval

Montreal got an early 2-goal lead but Boston made a comeback in the third period to take this game to OT. Nicole Gosling scored the game-winning goal in OT for the Victoire! Montreal has now secured home ice advantage for the playoffs.

Sat, Apr 18: Ottawa defeats New York 5-1; Charge scores two jailbreak goals on Pride Night!

📍 Ottawa

Poor Sirens😭 but this game looked fun AF for Charge fans ⚡😂 Just watching the highlights, the vibes were absolutely electric.

The Sirens scored first on the powerplay, but the Charge responded with TWO jailbreak goals in the second period!

This game was crucial for the playoffs, as the Ottawa Charge held onto 4th place.

Sat, Apr 18: Vancouver defeats Seattle 6-5 in OT; Goldeneyes eliminated from playoff contention, CJ start & pure chaos!

📍 Seattle

This was it CJ Jackson’s first Torrent start! After Torrent got a 2-goal lead with an empty-net goal, the Goldeneyes staged a comeback and scored with 1 second remaining. Jenn Gardiner scored 4 goals and set a record for most goals scored in a PWHL game! The Goldeneyes have now swept the Torrent in their inaugural season series.

Sun, Apr 19: Toronto shuts out Minnesota 2-0; The Sceptres powerplay keeps their playoff hopes alive!

📍 St. Paul

Prior to this game, the Sceptres power play was sitting at 8.8% and 0/4 against the Frost, but the Sceptres scored twice on the power play to win this game! Raygan Kirk was spectacular, making a 24-save shutout!

📈 Standings

x= playoff spot clinched, MAX = max points (PTS + 3*GR), GP= games played, GR= games remaining, PTS=points (determines standings), W=Win (3 points), OTW=overtime win (2 points), OTL=overtime loss(1 point), L=loss (0 points), PCT=points percentage, GF=goals for, GF=goals against.

The top four teams make the playoffs. Read my explanations of standings.

Surprisingly there was zero shifting in the standings this week! Ottawa Charge held onto their 4th place playoff spot although the Sceptres and Sirens are still close behind.

Montreal Victoire clinched home-ice advantage for the playoffs but the top playoff spot has not yet been clinched. See my playoff format explanation.

Gold Plan has now been activated for the Torrent and the Goldeneyes. The Torrent already have one gold plan point (see the PWHL Gold Plan tracker). See my explanation of Gold Plan.

👑 Tops and Bottoms of the Week

Top 🔝: Vancouver Goldeneyes. Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, they truly gave it their all, including stunning the Torrent with an OT loss, which also prevented Torrent from gaining gold plan points. They have built momentum to capitalize on the end of their season!

Bottom 💔: Seattle Torrent. I struggle not to put Torrent on the bottom every week, but getting scored on with 1.6 seconds remaining when you were about to earn 3 gold plan points in regulation is pretty brutal lol. Minnesota Frost also had 2 losses but honestly they are kinda chilling before the playoffs.

🗓️ This week’s schedule

Watch my preview video of this week’s schedule! There will be 3 main storylines this week, and it all ends with a quadruple header!

  1. Playoff race (highlighted in green): New York, Toronto, and Ottawa will battle for the fourth and final playoff spot. The playoff race may come down to the final day of the season, with Toronto vs Ottawa on Saturday.

  2. Gold plan (highlighted in pink): Vancouver and Seattle duel for the gold plan against Minnesota and Montreal.

  3. Race for first place: Boston and Montreal both want to clinch first place, which will give them the ability to choose their opponent in the semifinal round of the playoffs!

Coming soon: Expansion news?

On April 4, PWHL Advisory Board member Stan Kasten said that there would be expansion news “in the next few weeks”. Expansion was announced around this time last year so I would expect an announcement sometime soon…👀

The Kraken Have Wasted Their First 5 Years

No bc why was I in men’s hockey business. The management has been terrible though and it’s actually so annoying. Watch my take on the Kraken.
